Ingredients

Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb Italian sausage mild or spicy
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
  • 1 can tomato paste (6 oz)
  • 1 cup onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
Cheese Mixture
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 large egg beaten
Lasagna Layers
  • 12 lasagna noodles cooked al dente
  • 3 cups mozzarella cheese shredded

Equipment

  • Baking Dish
  • Saucepan

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a saucepan, sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add ground beef and sausage, cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes to develop flavor.
  4. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions, then drain and set aside.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and beaten egg.
  6. To assemble, spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a baking dish. Layer noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and meat sauce. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until cheese is golden brown.
  8. Let lasagna rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For an extra rich sauce, add a splash of red wine while simmering. You can also substitute ground beef with turkey for a leaner version.
